Game On: 14 DGC Ontario Productions That Bring Sports to Screens

Sports stories hold a distinctive place in Canadian film and television. From small-town hockey arenas to sprawling baseball diamonds, these productions celebrate more than athletic achievement, exploring themes of friendship, identity, family, and resilience, leaving a lasting impact on audiences. 

To celebrate the Toronto Blue Jays and their first World Series run since 1993, here are some of the best DGC Ontario Productions about baseball, hockey, lacrosse, and all the other sports we know and love, available to watch now and coming soon. 

The Grizzlies (2018)

Filmed primarily in Nunavut, The Grizzlies tells the true story of a small Inuit community transformed through the influence of sports and teamwork. Lacrosse becomes more than a sport, uniting the community and empowering its youth with pride and hope. Director Miranda De Pencier shares her appreciation for the cast, crew, and the original Grizzlies team in this Wider Lens interview.

Youngblood (2025)

DGC Ontario Director Hubert Davis inspires audiences in a modern reimagining of the 1986 hockey classic Youngblood. The film follows a young Black Canadian hockey prodigy in his mission toward being drafted into the National Hockey League. After garnering praise at TIFF 2025 for its mature tone, Youngblood has been widely anticipated. Indian Horse (2017)

Created as a film adaptation of the original novel of the same name by Richard Wagamese, Indian Horse follows Saul Indian Horse, a young Ojibway boy who survives residential school in 1970s Canada. Hockey has always given Saul a sense of belonging, but his true victory comes in facing the weight of racism and buried trauma to reclaim his own story.

Cinderella Man (2005)

The true story of heavyweight boxer James J. Braddock during the Great Depression as a labourer who returns to the ring after years of not boxing. The fear for both his safety and his family’s economic stability increases when he aims to defeat the intimidating defending heavyweight champion.

Shoresy (2022-)

Shoresy, the critically acclaimed spinoff of Canadian comedy Letterkenny, sees fan-favourite character Shoresy join a senior AAA hockey team in Sudbury, Ontario. With the team at the bottom of the league and on the brink of folding, they get one last shot when Shoresy makes a bold promise: they will never lose another game.

Slo Pitch (2026)

DGC Ontario Directors J Stevens and Karen Knox take their hit web series to the big screen with comedy series Slo Pitch. The series follows a queer, underdog slo-pitch softball team and their strong-willed coach. Slo Pitch will combine sharp humour with themes of identity and authenticity, celebrating queer joy on and off the field.

Black Ice (2022)

This powerful documentary explores the shameful history of racism in hockey through the stories and experiences of Black players who broke barriers in a predominantly white sport. From the creation of Canada’s Coloured Hockey League to the lingering racism that still endures today, DGC Ontario Director Hubert Davis sheds light on the prejudice woven into the Canadian sport.

Mighty Jerome (2010)

The late DGC Ontario Director Charles Officer captures the remarkable true story of Harry Jerome, Canada’s most record-setting track and field star. Officer establishes the documentary’s themes of perseverance and courage, effectively celebrating the man whose speed and spirit left a mark on Canadian sport.

Heated Rivalry (2025)

Based on the popular novel of the same name by Canadian author Rachel Reid, this upcoming series adaptation brings an ‘enemies-to-lovers’ romance to the screen. DGC Quebec Director Jacob Tierney, known for his work on Letterkenny and Shoresy, creates Heated Rivalry, following two hockey stars whose competition takes an unexpected romantic turn.

Warrior Strong (2023)

Directed by DGC Ontario Director Shane Belcourt, this heartfelt drama follows a suspended professional basketball player who returns to his Northern Ontario hometown to coach his former high school’s struggling team. By guiding the young athletes, he rediscovers his love for basketball and learns that the sport’s lessons extend far beyond the court.

Men with Brooms (2002)

A unique Canadian comedy that tells the story of a lifelong group of friends reuniting as a curling team to fulfill their coach’s final wish. Director Paul Gross turns this entertaining and eccentric movie into a celebration of friendship in sport with a nod to small-town life.

Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story (2026)

DGC Ontario Director Cory Bowles tells the complex story of 1980s Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson. The series shows Johnson’s side of events, bringing to light a more nuanced perspective on the athlete. From rivalries to drug tests to breaking world records, Johnson’s story is iconic in Canadian sports history.

Chicks with Sticks (2004)

With the growing success of Professional Women’s Hockey League teams across Canada and the United States, female-driven hockey stories are gaining more recognition. Chicks with Sticks follows a passionate hockey-playing mother who assembles a women’s team to challenge the local men’s team. DGC Ontario Director Kari Skogland critiques the systemic barriers that long excluded women from the hockey world.

Fever Pitch (2005)

As the Toronto Blue Jays make a deep playoff run this season, it’s impossible to not think of classic baseball movies like Fever Pitch. This romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon explores the story of a young couple whose love is tested when one partner’s loyalty to baseball –specifically the Boston Red Sox– becomes a challenge in their relationship.
