Remembering Norman Jewison

We are saddened by the news that DGC Ontario Life Member and world-renowned Canadian Director Norman Jewison passed away on January 20 at 97, leaving behind a cinematic legacy of dozens of critically acclaimed and award-winning films that continue to inspire and entertain decades later.

Best known for In the Heat of the Night (1967), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), and Moonstruck (1987), Jewison’s films transcended genres, earning him widespread international acclaim. His exploration of racial tensions in the American South and timeless narratives touched audiences worldwide.

His lasting impact includes the founding of the Canadian Film Centre, an institution fostering emerging Canadian talent and innovation. Many DGC Ontario Members are CFC alumni, and we are forever grateful to Norman for creating this space to nurture and develop Canadian filmmakers and their careers. Norman will be forever remembered for his dedication to storytelling as a tool for social change and his instrumental role in shaping the future of Canadian cinema.
